Our Story

It all began in the district of Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku when Grand Master Kiyoshi Suzuki started a small kissaten in Tokyo with its own roastery in 1944. Suzuki Coffee Co Ltd was born out of the passion for coffee and pursuit of roasting perfection. Committed to this vision, Grand Master Suzuki pioneered Sumiyaki Roasting; a charcoal roasting technique which requires years of practice and roasting with extremely high degree of precision to achieve a consistent and distinctive coffee flavour.

As business grew in the 1960s, Suzuki faced the challenge of maintaining the roasting profile and quality whilst meeting increase in production demand. To cope with this challenge, Suzuki Coffee became the one of the first few kissaten in Japan to adopt the use of Probat drum roaster, a state-of-the-art machine at that time. From there, Grand Master Suzuki spent another 6 years further perfecting his roasting to achieve the iconic ‘Sumiyaki’ flavours on a drum roaster. This roasting technology, also known as the “Double Roasting” is our legacy and is still in use at Suzuki Coffee today.

In 1979, being the eldest and most gifted protégé, Hideki Endo-San inherited Suzuki Coffee Co Ltd from Grand Master Suzuki.

During his maiden visit to Singapore, Endo-san saw the opportunity to introduce Suzuki’s unique roasting techniques and premium gourmet coffees to Singapore where the locals only drank traditional coffee. Armed with a passion for coffee and the intricate roasting skills inherited from the Grand Master, Endo-san established the pioneer gourmet coffee roastery in Singapore in 1979 followed by the first gourmet cafe in 1982 at Bukit Timah Plaza.

This year marked a pivotal milestone for Suzuki as the roastery responded to increased production demands by relocating to Ang Mo Kio and later to its current residence at Chin Bee Avenue. The subsequent expansion of export operations and partnerships with renowned airlines (Silk Air, British Airways to name a few) showcased Suzuki’s increasing influence as a key industry player.

Joining the journey in 1985 – Freddy Loo, the first apprentice, mastered the art of roasting, becoming a living witness to Suzuki’s evolution. Now Suzuki’s Coffee Master, Freddy continues the legacy ensuring each cup embodies the craft’s rich heritage and excellence, playing an integral role in Suzuki’s transformative journey since its inception.

From a small kissaten in Tokyo to Singapore’s pioneer coffee roastery – times may change with each passing decade but our dedication to the pursuit of perfection remains unchanged.

That, is why we are investing in the future of perfection..
