099 Luis Anabel Gesha

Luis Anibal Calderón, a second-generation coffee grower from Acevedo, Huila, Colombia, began working in coffee fields at just 12 years old. By 40, he expanded his vision with a 20-hectare farm, Villa Betulia, where he produced high-quality coffee. His journey, marked by resilience and innovation, has established him as a leader in Colombian coffee.

In 2011, Luis joined the specialty coffee association, pushing him to experiment with micro-lots and new processing methods. In 2012, he introduced 5000 Gesha trees to his farm, a move that added unique complexity and floral notes to his offerings.

The distinctive flavours of his coffee are partly due to the meticulous anaerobic natural fermentation process. Beans ferment in sealed tanks or grainpro bags, where the absence of oxygen allows natural enzymes to break down sugars over 40 hours, developing rich and unique flavour profiles. Temperature and pH are carefully monitored to ensure quality and consistency. After fermentation, the beans are naturally dried over 15 to 20 days.

Luis’s commitment to sustainability is equally important. In 2019, he adopted sustainable farming practices, incorporating native trees to restore biodiversity and improve the ecosystem. His farm also provides valuable employment to the local community, creating lasting positive impacts.

Each cup of Luis Anibal’s coffee tells a story of innovation, sustainability, and dedication to the craft—qualities that make his coffee truly exceptional.
