Esmeralda Geisha: A Panamanian Icon
The rediscovery of the Geisha variety put Panamanian coffee on the global map. Renowned for its floral character and unique flavour, Geisha quickly became one of the most celebrated coffee varieties worldwide.
Originally brought from Ethiopia, the Geisha tree had been introduced to Panama but fell into disuse due to low productivity and adaptability challenges. The Peterson family, owners of Esmeralda Farm, recognized its potential on high-altitude farmland. They found that the variety developed a distinctive, jasmine-like flavour — echoing its Ethiopian roots yet uniquely Panamanian.
In 2004, Esmeralda Geisha debuted at the “Best of Panama” auction, winning first place and continuing to dominate for the next four years. The auction set record-breaking prices and cemented both the Geisha variety and Esmeralda Farm as icons in specialty coffee.
Esmeralda Farm maintains meticulous control over production, carefully separating lots and evaluating each coffee through rigorous cupping. The Private Collection, grown at 1,600–1,800 meters, captures the essence of Esmeralda’s high-altitude Geisha. With cupping scores of 87–90 points, it is produced under the same conditions as the highest-ranking auction lots, offering a representative and accessible expression of the farm’s exceptional coffee.
The Jaramillo Estate Private Collection Geisha Esmeralda is celebrated for vibrant floral notes, delicate jasmine aroma, and a complex, layered cup profile. Silky-bodied with bright yet balanced acidity and lingering sweetness, it reflects the care, precision, and high-altitude terroir of Boquete—truly a coffee where every sip tells a story.
